Making patchwork by the classic technique of tacking fabric over papers is an easy way to make a quilt. It is also a great way of using up worn clothing or dressmaking scraps. At this workshop we will be working with the classic honeycomb shape and learning how to tack and oversew the patches together.
The finished rosette is then stitched onto a lavender bag which makes an ideal present, or handy to have nearby when you need a whiff of the relaxing scent! If you have sewn patchwork before there will be an option of sewing a more complex design inspired by the tiled pathways seen around Hove.
There will be lots of samples and inspiration, and a chance to talk about how you may want to develop this technique into something bigger after the workshop. A little kit of fabric, template, needle, backing fabric and lavender will be provided, then there will be additional thread to use when at the workshop.
About the Tutor:
Elizabeth Betts is a Hove based textile creative and the author of The Beginners Guide to Quilting and the Modern Quilt Bible. As well as writing, technical editing for other craft authors and editing a patchwork magazine in her varied work career, she has taught in lots of different places, from museums and libraries to parks and pubs.
Her work has its grounding in historical techniques but adapted to fit into a modern lifestyle. With many years of teaching quilting behind her she still gets a thrill when someone who says they cannot sew or was criticised when at school leaves her workshop saying they enjoyed it and had a good time.
